Appendix: Ages of Elyra Timeline UTD Timecoding #

This page defines out-of-character (OOC) information used when developing the world and it’s stories.

This page outlines the years assigned to The Ages of Elyra, the commonly accepted Elyran timeline.

Purpose #

Elyran Time is expressed as numerics in relation to ages. Each age begins from year 0, and counts up. Therefore, there are duplicate year 0s throughout recorded history. While this system allows for clear segmentation of events, it can be confusing to express sequences of history that span multiple ages.

To address this, an additional time scale is used called Universal Time Date, or UTD which starts at year 0, the earliest point in recorded history and counts up, never resetting. When creating a timeline, eras are added to the timeline, and events to eras. For each entry, the UTD (or, for Eras, the UTD range) is assigned and this value is used to determine the order in which events show on timelines. For this reason, entries on The Ages of Elyra have two values:

  1. A UTD such as 1004 (appearing after 1003 and before 1005), which is used to control the order in which events appear.
  2. An override, which controls the canonical date (such as 530IPA).

Date Ranges #

The following UTD ranges are used for the Ages of Elyra.

Age UTD Start UTD End
Primordial Age 0 1000
Interlude (PA) 1001 2000
Rise of Life 2001 3000
Interlude (RL) 3001 4000
The Darkening 4001 5000
Interlude (DA) 5001 6000
The Age of Mortals (Current Era) 6001 7000

Usage #

Generally, Elyrans commonly use era-based notation (for example, 525IPA) in expressing time. UTD time is usually only used in acadamia or the sciences where sequences of events matter more than historical proximity.
