Appendix: Deity Details #
This page defines out-of-character (OOC) information used when developing the world and it’s stories.
In order to qualify for the status of deity, a being must meet a number of criteria. There are several levels of deity, ordered by their relative power level.
Accomplishments #
The being in question must have a number of awe-inspiring accomplishments attributable to their ability to exploit their associated essence or domain. For an event to be awe-inspiring, it must be something which cannot be explained by mortal causation. For example, creating a roaring bonfire stretching as high as a guard tower instantly and without tinder or the use of known magic would be awe-inspiring. Causing a volcano to erupt on command would also be awe-inspiring, while using tinder and good survival knowledge to light a spark and nurse it into a bonfire over time would not.
Worshippers #
Generally, a being must have a meaningful number of worshippers who seek their guidance or benevolence on matters related to their associated essence or domain, specifically in the form of prayer, ritual, or worship. For example, a deity associated with fire should expect that worshippers might pray to them for warmth on a cold winter night. Those associated with life might expect prayers for healing the sick or wounded.
This requirement applies to mortals who are elevated to godhood. In the case of deities who’s godhood is derived from the natural order of the universe, such as the two Prime Deities, or where they may ascend to godhood unknown to the world at large, the lack of worshippers does not disqualify the status as a deity, provided the other criteria are met.
