Crystal of Khaldur
Crystal of Khaldur

History #

The Crystal of Khaldur is a mysterious gem discovered in the northern mountainous region of Caoria. It is a small, sparkling blue crystal with a shimmering green essence, formed during the battle between the dragons and the primordial colossus of earth. During the battle, the first ancient dragon Khaldur committed the first intentional use of a magical spell by a sentient creature in the history of Elyra, in an attempt to defeat the monolithic beast.

As Khaldur was an ancient dragon with immense raw latent magical ability, this spell was extremely powerful. When the magic of the spell combined with the raw essence of the earth colossus, it exploded, killing the colossus and transforming the surrounding land into mountains and rocky tundra for hundreds of miles.

When he cast this spell, Khaldur was transformed forever; his draconic form began to glow with imbued runes and gems, and his eyes were sacrificed, given up as payment for his control of the elements. In place of his eyes he now has glowing orange orbs of fire that grant him truesight as well as normal sight. One of his physical eyes fell to the ground during the battle, imbued with a fragment of the combined power of Khaldur and the Colossus, while it’s twin’s location is unknown.

Discovery By The Order #

When the The Arcanum Order discovered the eye eons later, it was named the Crystal of Khaldur. The order has committed significant resources to studying the crystal in an attempt to discern it’s nature, properties, and power. While they do not yet have a full understanding of the nature of the crystal, they have been able to determine a small number of insights:

  • The Crystal of Khaldur is so named because of it’s relation to the mythological dragon Khaldur.
  • It bears at least some of it’s power due to direct contact with an event of great importance.
  • The crystal is a piece of a larger object, whose origins are unknown.

Power #

This crystal will shrink or grow to fit in the palm of it’s users hand. It can be attached to a weapon or piece of jewelery, held, or carried in a pocket or bag. The crystal conveys the following effects on any creature that uses it’s power, regardless of attunement or intent.

  1. (Once per spell cast) The holder must roll a d20. On a 20, a spell slot is not consumed for the cast, and the spell be cast at max level. The holder does not need to be aware of this effect for it to trigger.
  2. (Once ever, the first time the object is touched) The holder sees the final moments of the battle with the Earth Colossus through the eyes of Khaldur, up to the moment he casts the spell.
  3. Khaldur always knows the location and identity of the holder, and he may cast scrying on them at will.

Additionally, the crystal conveys the following effects on any creature that is attuned to it.

  1. Once per long rest, the holder may cast true seeing at no cost.
  2. Once per long rest, the holder may roll a d6. On a 6, roll a d20 to trigger an effect from the wild magic table. The holder may direct this effect at any creature or object they wish, that they can see clearly. They must be able to identify a specific creature or object to target, not simply a location.
  3. (At will) The holder may open and traverse the tether between The Wastes and The Ever Reach, and may hold the way open for other willing creatures so long as they remain near the tether.
